James R. “Jay” Old, Jr., a partner in the firm, is a native of Beaumont who began his legal career at Andrews & Kurth, L.L.P. in Houston in 1988 and joined Germer Gertz, L.L.P. in 1996. Jay has been a first-chair trial lawyer in a variety of litigation and arbitration matters, including construction, medical malpractice, products liability and premises liability cases. He has extensive experience in toxic tort litigation, professional liability, commercial litigation, construction litigation, insurance coverage and alleged "bad faith" cases. He is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the Supreme Court of Texas, all Texas courts, the United States Districts Court for the Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas, as well as the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. His activities within the legal community include the preparation and creation of several peer reviewed legal articles and service as a speaker at numerous Continuing Legal Education seminars. A member of the College of the State Bar of Texas, Jay served as President of the Texas Association of Defense Counsel in 2006-2007. He currently is a member of the Pattern Jury Charge Oversight Committee and has served on the State Bar of Texas Professionalism and Court Rules Committees as well as the Supreme Court Task Force to Expand Legal Services Delivery. He was also appointed to the Committee to Study Complex Courts legislation and Court Structure in Texas by the State Bar of Texas. He is active in the DRI, which he currently serves as Texas State Representative and has served as a member of the Jefferson County Bar Association Board of Directors. Jay enjoys his work with the board of the Symphony of Southeast Texas, is active in the Downtown Rotary Club of Beaumont and is Chair of the Trustees at Trinity United Methodist Church. Jay has been recognized as a Texas Super Lawyer as published in Texas Monthly for the past four years and is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates.
